Flatland

A mathematician once defined a place called Flatland were all of the beings in that land lived in two dimensions -- in a "Flatland".  The Flatlanders might have been circles on a table top.

If a three dimensional object, such as a banana is passed through Flatland, a 'person' in flatland would only see the slice of the banana that crosses the plane of Flatland.  They would not see the whole banana.  As the banana is fully passed through flatland, the variety of shapes seen would make little sense to the Flatlander.  This is because Flatlanders have  no concept of what a three dimensional banana is or would look like.  No doubt, the flatlander chicken little media has a heyday with each and every slice of unexplainable banana that crosses through their plane of existence.

The inherent natural checks and balances of the multidimensional civilization we live in are beyond the understanding of Flatlanders.  For example, to flatlanders, fairness is limited to the perspective of those living in Flatland, not in the multidimensional society and economy that exists around them.  Instead of checks and balances, they look to government decrees for their guidance and life blood.
